The "Senior" Years

It has long been known that our pets age more rapidly than we do.  A 10 year old dog or cat is like a person in their 60's and therefore has special needs and concerns.

If your pet is a SENIOR then here are some important considerations:

1. Change the food.  Lower calories, higher fiber and less protein are important factors for the digestive system of the older pet.

2. Add a daily vitamin supplement.

3. Add a potassium supplement (cats). Older cats commonly develop low levels and "seem old and less energetic".

4. Have a blood test done annually. Many problems can be corrected if detected early, before the pet shows signs of illness.

5. Keep its teeth well maintained. Heavy tartar on the teeth and mouth infection weakens the aging pet's entire system and shortens its life.

6. Keep vaccinations current. Older pets have weaker immune systems.

IT'S FINALLY HERE

SENTINEL is a once-a-month pill for dogs that combines the flea infestation control of Program and the heartworm / intestinal worm prevention of Interceptor. If you are using both of these monthly medications already you can now give 1 pill that will do the job of both (and the total cost is less !!).

QUESTION:

We have LOST OUR PET. What should we do?  Our family is heartbroken.

ANSWER:

FAST action is "the key".  If your pet was wearing a collar with an ID tag then recovery is easier. A concerned neighbor will often catch the pet and read the name / phone number on the tag.

AND:

Make flyers to post around the neighborhood. Hand written or computer generated signs on normal 8½ x 11 white paper can be quickly duplicated (including large poster sizes) at most copy stores (Kinko's is open 24 hrs. a day).

Call all shelters to file a "lost pet" report.

Mission Viejo 470-3045
Irvine 724-7740
Laguna Beach 497-3552
San Clemente / Dana Point 492-1617
Orange County 935-7419
(Orange County requires daily visits to their shelter)

Call all newspapers to place a "lost pet" ad. Most will run the ad free for 4 days.

Identification Microchips will get your pet returned to you. All shelters do scan for microchips. If your pet does not have one, please call 8377333.  They only cost $35.
