ACUPUNCTURE / HERBAL THERAPY

Dr. Caroline Goulard, a veterinarian, is certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), with additional expertise in Chinese herbal therapy.

Acupuncture and/or Chinese herbals may be helpful:

  • as disease prevention
  • when usual treatment regiment fails
  • in conjunction with traditional treatment
  • as the only treatment (for certain conditions)
  • as an alternative option when harmful side effects from a drug are a concern
  • when surgery is not a feasible option

Acupuncture effects:

  • relieves pain, increases blood flow, has anti-inflammatory effects
  • stimulates the body's natural defense systems
  • usually produces a response within 1 to 4 sessions; some cases may take
  • up to 8 sessions before a response is seen.

The following conditions may be helped or relieved by acupuncture therapy and/or Chinese herbals:

  • Chronic pain, arthritis, intervertebral disc disease "slipped disc"
  • Muscular strains and spasms
  • Skin disorders (allergy), some dermatitis, lick granuloma
  • Certain types of nerve injury, certain types of nerve paralysis, epilepsy.
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation (megacolon in cats), inflammatory bowel disease
  • Asthma, various types of chronic cough, sinusitis.
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Part of wellness program for geriatric animals, cancer patients.
  • Certain hormonal disease: Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's), Diabetes Mellitus

Acupuncture and Chinese herbals are practiced according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where the emphasis is disease prevention and correction of underlying imbalances. This approach is different from standard medical practice, where existing disease is diagnosed and directly treated.
